European Union Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism

ALL NEW EUROPEAN UNION PURCHASES COME WITH A NICOFE EMISSIONS CERTIFICATE IN LINE WITH THE CURRENT EUROPEAN COMMISSION REGULATIONS

The EU’s new Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) for iron and steel, has implications for your business. You’re probably already aware that it’s a scheme designed to encourage cleaner production processes and support the EU in achieving its climate goals. Full details can be found here.

In a nutshell, CBAM was launched late last year and involves charges for greenhouse gases emitted during the production of certain goods entering the EU, including iron and steel. The programme is currently in a transition phase but there’s a requirement to produce quarterly reports on the iron and steel you import covering emissions and carbon prices due or paid. Payments are scheduled to begin in 2026.

In preparation for this, we’ve requested detailed information from all our suppliers on their approach to CBAM compliance for customers in the EU. We understand this is a considerable undertaking for all producers and will take several months to compile. Using this information, over the coming months we’ll be reporting back to you with our own proposals on the best way to navigate the CBAM regulations – and how we’ll assist in the process.

The CBAM initiative has implications across the iron and steel supply chain for any organisations working with customers in the EU. I wanted to let you know that we’re committed to ensuring your organisation has the smoothest and most efficient transition to the new regime.
