Space Sector, Updates

Setting the standards in our Space

With this year’s UK Space Conference now in the rearview mirror, I thought it might be useful to briefly revisit the event and share some of the key takeaways from the Nicofe team. Given our experience at the show, there’s no doubt that the Space sector is vibrant, rapidly evolving and continuing to grow at a pace. It was a great opportunity to speak in depth with potential and existing customers and to learn more about their specific business priorities and challenges, as well as the issues currently facing the sector as a whole.

Unsurprisingly, economic uncertainty, material supply issues and cost volatility are high on the list of concerns in the face of continuing global instability and as new tariffs begin to bite. As a result, organisations are increasingly looking for additional value from their suppliers – from guaranteed access to quality material and robust quality control procedures, to high specification machining capabilities and transparent pricing. More than ever, they want maximum bang for their buck.

In our conversations about these challenges and corresponding customer expectations, we had the chance to expand on our own offering and explain in more detail some of the ways our approach and our capabilities are helping to mitigate against market conditions and provide a degree of stability. Some of those we spoke to were broadly aware of how our added-value services could make a positive difference to their own operational performance, and others were surprised and reassured when they learned the nature of what we could offer.

On a detail level, many of our conversations revolved around torquer rods, one of the most important components in successful satellite operation. Interestingly, our approach to providing these materials perfectly illustrates the way that we work across the business and demonstrates why we’re genuinely different to other suppliers.

For example, we were able to explain our sourcing procedure and how it ensures quality and full chain custody, our always-available stocking policy, how the lathe in our fully equipped workshop pre-machines to net shapes and precise specifications, and how we heat treat and test every single product before it leaves the warehouse. We discussed our quality control processes and procedure for identifying and discarding any sub-standard materials, the care we take in packaging all components in mesh for delivery, and how we partner with organisations such as Plymouth Electron Microscopy Centre to provide unique product insights that save customers time and expense.

It was also exciting to talk to guests about our role in lunar exploration and the real-world impact our materials are having – most recently with the cobalt-iron flight-critical component found in the jet propulsion system of the world’s first private moon landing in March this year. And now we look forward with great anticipation to the next launch in August!

In the meantime, please get in touch to discuss your own operational challenges and find out how our added-value services can help.
